How proper site preparation can help extend your Cape Cod outdoor living season

On Cape Cod, we spend a lot of time creating outdoor spaces to enjoy during the summer. But a hot tub can help extend the use of your backyard well into the shoulder seasons—when the days get cooler, the crowds thin out, and a crisp fall evening outside sounds pretty appealing.

It can also make your outdoor space more inviting in early spring, long before summer officially arrives.

Before the hot tub shows up, however, there’s an important question to answer:

Is your yard actually ready for it?

At Evergreen Landscaping, we recently worked with a Cape Cod homeowner who wanted to add a hot tub to an existing backyard. They had the space and the vision, but the grade of the property meant this wasn’t simply a matter of pouring a concrete pad and calling it done.

It required some groundwork—literally.

Creating a Level, Stable Space

Hot tubs are heavy. Once filled with water and people, even a relatively modest hot tub can weigh several thousand pounds. That makes a properly prepared, level and stable foundation essential.

For this project, the existing landscape needed to be excavated and regraded to create an appropriate location adjacent to the homeowner’s existing outdoor living area.

The Evergreen crew excavated the site, prepared the base and established the elevations necessary to create a level, usable space.

Because of the change in grade, the project also required another important component: a retaining wall.

More Than a Wall: Making the Yard Work

Retaining walls can be both a practical and attractive solution for Cape Cod properties where slopes and elevation changes make it difficult to create usable, level areas.

For this project, the retaining wall allowed us to establish and support the new hot tub area while incorporating it naturally into the existing backyard.

Once the wall was constructed and the base properly prepared, we poured a concrete pad, creating the solid, level surface needed for the homeowner’s future hot tub.

The finished result may look relatively simple, but what’s underneath and around that concrete pad is just as important as what you can see.

Ready for the Finishing Touch

With the retaining wall complete and the concrete pad poured, the site was ready for the homeowner’s hot tub installation.

Evergreen’s part of the project was complete: a level, stable space designed to support the new addition while working with the existing landscape and outdoor living area.

It’s also a great example of why planning and site preparation should happen before a hot tub—or any substantial new outdoor feature—arrives.

Planning for a Hot Tub on Cape Cod

If a hot tub is on your wish list, it helps to think beyond where you’d like to put it.

Before installation, consider:

  • Site access: Can equipment and materials reach the proposed location?

  • Grading: Is the area already level, or will excavation and grading be necessary?

  • Foundation: What type of pad or base is required for the hot tub you’re purchasing?

  • Drainage: How will water move around the new area and the rest of the property?

  • Retaining walls: Does the property’s elevation require additional support or grade changes?

  • Connection to existing spaces: How will you comfortably get from the house, deck or patio to the hot tub?

  • Future landscaping: Could plantings, walkways, screening or lighting help the new area feel like a natural part of the property?

Thinking through these details before delivery can make the entire project go much more smoothly.

Extend Your Cape Cod Outdoor Living Season

One of the best things about adding a hot tub is that it isn’t just a summer amenity.

September and October can bring some beautiful weather to Cape Cod, and a hot tub can make the backyard inviting even as temperatures begin to drop. In the spring, it can give you another reason to head outdoors before patio and beach season are fully underway.

When planning improvements to your Cape Cod landscape, it’s worth thinking beyond the peak summer months. The right additions can help create an outdoor living space you can enjoy through more of the year.
